Remote Mapping with NavCam™

Scenario #1

Picture this, you’re on a solo spot and stalk archery mule deer hunt. Across the canyon is a mature early season velvet buck any hunter would be thrilled to stalk. To make this happen, you need to keep out of sight while doing a big loop around the backside of the ridge. Quickly you take visual notes of landmarks around the bedded buck to get you within shooting range on the stalk. Let’s go!
When you finally arrive where you thought the buck was bedded, nothing looks the same because your perspective has changed. Unsure of exactly where he is, you start slowly moving and glassing to orient yourself and relocate him when suddenly he explodes from his bed 100 yards far to your left. Another failed stalk due to location miscalculation.

Scenario #2

Just below the top of the ridge, you spot a nice bull across the canyon. You make a great stalk to put you in a comfortable rifle range and wait for him to stand up. He stands, offering you an angle at his vitals. You fire and hear an unmistakable thump of a well placed shot. Still the bull quickly disappears into the cover of timber. Confidently you make your way up and across the canyon. When you arrive, again your perspective has changed and you struggle to find the exact spot he was standing when you hit him. After an exhaustive search, some nail biting and uneasiness, you end up finding the bull but now have to pack him out alone, in the wee hours of the morning.

The Solution

Scenarios like this play out over and over each year during hunting season. If it hasn’t happened to you yet, you’re either a liar or don’t hunt enough. At BaseMap we wanted to find a solution to relocation problems hunters encounter each year in the field. We did it with NavCam.

NavCam™️

The solution is actually really simple. It is a feature within our BaseMap Pro app called NavCam™️
Using the lost buck from scenario #1, let’s walk through how you would use NavCam TM ️ from the stalk all the way through the harvest.

You watch the buck make its final bed for the morning. Now before beginning the stalk, you pull out your phone and follow these steps to put you exactly where you want to be for a shot.

  1. Open your BaseMap app and click on the + sign (tools menu) in the lower right hand corner.
  2. Here you will find a tool called Remote Marker. Tap on it.
  3. When you tap on the remote marker tool it will open another screen that will say Distance to Target. Range the buck using your rangefinder.
  4. Enter the range in the app and press next.
  5. This opens up the NavCam™ feature. Once NavCam™ is open you will see a crosshair and bubble level. Level the camera and simply aim the crosshair where your buck is bedded.
  6. Once you settle on the spot, tap the set button on the right side of the display. Now you’ve created a remote marker.

Remote Markers

Once you’ve set the remote marker where the buck is bedded, you’ll be back on your map with the remote marker visible. If you take the time to make sure your range is good and that you have correctly placed the spot on your NavCam™, this remote marker will be accurate within one degree of your target.

With this marker you have the tool to put you precisely where you want to be for a shot without losing your bearings. It also makes it very easy to take a concealed route and not have to keep an eye on the buck. As you get in close, simply use BaseMap’s XDR Navigation Tool (eXact Direction & Range) to see your location and distance compared to your remote marker.

Scenario #1 Replay

You’re solo hunting archery mule deer. Big buck spotted bedded across the canyon. Using NavCam™️ and your remote marker, you make a big loop out of sight. You crest the ridge in perfect relation to the buck, put the wind in your favor, and stalk to within 40 yards of the precisely marked buck on your BaseMap app. Thirty minutes later he stands and you make the perfect shot.

A BaseMap Exclusive

This feature is proving to be a game changer for hunters needing to relocate animals while stalking, after the shot, relocating glassed up shed antlers, and many other uses where you need to move from point A to point B with precision. It’s saving hunter’s time, energy, effort, and making them more efficient hunters. NavCam™️ can absolutely be the difference maker on your hunt. The more you use it the more you’ll wonder why no one else has this feature. BaseMap is the only app with remote mapping technology, period.

  1. I must admit I don’t use Basemaps to it’s full potential. But I am looking forward to trying remote marker on my next shed hunting trip. In the past month it would have been helpful during 3 across canyon shed spots with binoculars.
